CARRBORO - Bread & Butter jumped out to an early lead Thursday night and then fought off a middle-innings rally by top-seeded 300 East Main Street to win its first Carrboro Co-Rec Softball championship.

B&B’s 7-5 victory in Thursday’s final at Anderson Community Park was its second over East Main in the double-elimination tournament and left the champions with a final record of 13-3.

“A couple of other teams have dominated this league for what’s now been decades,” B&B captain Bill Schrader said. “To finally break through and get the championship feels phenomenal.”

East Main also finished 13-3.

Ghost Riders (11-6) came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed after having given 300 East Main its only loss in the regular season. B&B beat Ghost Riders 8-6 in the tournament’s second round on Oct. 16 and two nights later throttled 300 East Main 20-8 to send the top seeds into the elimination bracket.

Ghost Riders fought its way back past Fightin’ Squids with a 16-4 win in the lower bracket and then Southern Rail 15-1 last Tuesday. East Main then eliminated Ghost Riders with a 15-3 decision in Tuesday night’s last game.

“We’d always ended up in the losers’ bracket before and then had to fight our way to the finals,” Schrader said. “This time we took care of business and stayed in the championship bracket.”

Thursday, Bread & Butter showed no signs of its week-long wait for the survivor of the elimination bracket and used solid hitting to take a 2-1 lead in the first innings. 300 East Main had several balls sail just foul or caught near the fence and closed to within 5-4 in the sixth. But pitcher Amber Wells and B&B’s fielders held East Main scoreless in the seventh to notch the win.

“We just hit too many balls in the air and didn’t score enough runs,” East Main captain Laura van Sant said. “You’re not going to win too many softball games with just five runs.

“Still, we only lost three games all year and we had a lot of fun," said 300 East Main captain Laura van Sant. "And that’s why you play softball: to have fun.”

Along with Billy Schrader at captain and Wells on the mound, the victorious Bread & Butter team included: Kevin Banda, Christine Barnett, Kat Bendt, Jason Damweber, Alan Friedman, Sarah Gaby, Jenna Gengler, Keith Kreps, Patrick Lackey, Ethan Loewenthal, Paul Lyon, Amanda Rinkenbaugh, Samantha Snow, Jess Sorrentino, Matthew Spencer, Deirdre Tatomer and Mike Witzman.
