Lena Ozell Davis Cherry of Chapel Hill died on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at The Dubose Center, The Cedars at Meadowmont in Chapel Hill.

Lena Cherry was born on November 2, 1923 in Marion County, Alabama, to John Granville and Margie Jackson Davis. She grew up in Alabama and attended Peabody College, now Vanderbilt University. She married William Robert “Bill” Cherry on August 10, 1944.

Mr. Cherry preceded her in death in December of 2000. She is also predeceased by her parents, her sister, Maudie Davis McRoy, and her brother, John D. Davis.

Mrs. Cherry is survived by a brother, Jim Davis, and sisters Mildred McGuire, Mary Sue Gann and Anna Rae Manscill, all of Alabama, and her sister-in-law Peggy Cherry Stell of Raleigh. Mrs. Cherry is also survived by her four children, Pamela Kay Cherry Little (David) and William Robert Cherry, Jr. (Beth), of Wilmington, NC; John Dewey Cherry of Nokomis, FL; and Mitzi Davis Cherry Moye (Andy) of Maury, NC. She adored her grandchildren David James Little, Jr. (Christina), William Robert Cherry, III (Stuart), Hollis Cherry Moye Ray (Cliff), Georgia Chadwick Cherry, Lawrence Anderson Moye, IV (Brittany), and Elizabeth McLaurin Cherry Stern (Ian). She took great pleasure in her growing family, great-grandchildren, Sara Jane, Anabelle Lynn and Lila Cherry Little; and William Robert Cherry, IV, Charlotte Cannon Cherry, and the latest addition to the family, Davis Chadwick Cherry, born on the morning of October 18, 2012. Also left to cherish her memory are Mattie Williams, Carlette Fields, Dorcas Smith and many, many “adopted” family members.

Mrs.Cherry was an active and devoted member of United Church of Chapel Hill. She especially loved being a part of the Women’s Fellowship. She was an officer with Collier Cobb & Associates for over 30 years while raising her family on Greenwood Road with the loving support of Mattie Williams. Lena and Bill loved Carolina athletics and enjoyed attending sports events. They also loved their bridge clubs and golf groups.

Mrs. Cherry’s family would like to express great appreciation for the compassionate care extended to her by Dr. Pat Guiteras, Dr. Paula Miller, the staff of The Cedars, and her many loving friends.

A memorial service will be held at United Church of Chapel Hill on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at 3:00 pm, after a private burial service. The Reverends Rick and Jill Edens will officiate.

There will be a reception with the family at the church immediately following the service.
