CARRBORO - Friends following a GPS signal from UNC-Chapel Hill student David Shannon’s cell phone found his body last weekend at a concrete plant.

Police released copies this week of two 911 calls from Shannon’s friends. The men, who called 911 dispatchers at 10:34 p.m. Saturday, said they had been looking for him all day.

“I don’t know if he’s alive. Could you all come as soon as possible?” one caller said. “We just found him by some bricks. His face is purple, and there’s cuts all over him.”

Carrboro Police Department spokesman Lt. Chris Atack said Shannon, 18, of Charlotte, was last seen drinking alcohol late Friday night and early Saturday morning. He may have been alone when he apparently fell 40 feet from a conveyor at the Ready Mixed Concrete Plant to a concrete surface below, Atack said.

A 911 operator told a second caller that paramedics were on the way before guiding him through chest compressions. They weren’t sure if Shannon was alive, the caller said.

Place the heel of your hand on his breastbone and put other hand on top, the operator told him. Pump fast, letting his chest come up all the way, until help can take over, he said. Count with me – one, two, three, four …

The caller sobbed harder.

“Stay with me. We’ve got to do this together, OK?” the operator said.

Two and a half minutes later, after 57 compressions, the caller stopped pumping and sirens could be heard in the background. The operator asked if Shannon has any lacerations or cuts.

“I don’t know man, I don’t know,” the caller said through tears before hanging up.

Preliminary autopsy results have found Shannon’s injuries are consistent with a fall. Alcohol could have been involved, Atack said. Toxicology results are not available yet.
