Smith Middle School's Camron Thornton ran for 221 yards and a touchdown Wednesday to lead the Cyclones to a 22-0 victory over Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools' rival Culbreth. Smith scored all three of its touchdowns in the last 8 minutes of play in the game, finished under the lights at Carrboro High School.

Carrboro High's players, most of who had lettered previously at Culbreth Middle School, watched the last parts of the game after their own practice. Many of them joined the post-game huddles on the field.

Culbreth’s record afterwards was 5-2 on the season, with a postponed game still to be played at Southern Roxboro. Its season completed, Smith finished 7-1 and was second in the OPAC behind undefeated Stanford.

Thorton's big day running the ball brought him to 874 yards rushing for the season, setting a record for Smith's program, team coaches said.
