The suspect approached two people in front of The Library, located at 120 E. Franklin St., around 2:10 a.m. and hit a woman with his hand. He then waved a handgun before firing it once and running toward the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. The suspect is described as a light-skinned black man, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, and wearing a puffy beige coat with a fur collar. Police did not release additional descriptive details.

Police reported finding a Federal shell casing at the scene.

UNC-CH officials issued a mid-level warning to the campus that morning, about three hours after the incident, to alert students and staff about the possibility of a “continuing danger to the campus community.”
