Jean Ballantyne Gerhardt, 90, of Lovettsville, VA died November 12, 2012. She was born May 10, 1922 in the Panama Canal Zone, where her parents were stationed. Jean graduated from high school while her family was stationed at Pearl Harbor and subsequently attended Stanford University. She worked for Douglas Aircraft during World War II, then married Paul Gerhardt in 1946 and made their first home in Chapel Hill, NC. After moving to McLean, VA in 1967, Jean worked as a film librarian for Fairfax County Public Library. She received her MLS degree from University of Maryland and became a branch manager. She worked as a librarian for 28 years, retiring at age 75. In 1988 she moved to Lovettsville, VA where she enjoyed bridge, book clubs, travel and family. Jean loved art and served as a volunteer for over 25 years at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and also volunteered at the Leesburg Smithsonian Naturalist Center.

Jean is survived by her brother Robert Ballantyne (Lygia) of McLean; three children and their spouses, Paul and Patricia Gerhardt of Centreville, MD, Ann Gerhardt and Curtis Nickles of Chapel Hill, NC and Amy Gerhardt and Christopher Howlett of Lovettsville, VA; Grandchildren Alison Nickles, Laura Ellese Nickles, Evan Howlett, Giles Howlett, Walker Howlett, Noah Howlett, Daniel Gerhardt and Julia Gerhardt; Great-grandchildren Cora Howlett, Vesper Howlett and Lilly Gerhardt; Nieces and Nephews Suzanne Carswell, Kate Goodspeed, James Gerhardt, Christopher Ballantyne, Maria Ballantyne, Thomas Ballantyne and Anita Harris. She was predeceased by her father, Col. Lowyd W. R. Ballantyne, mother, Della Oneita Jadwin, and brother Dr. Lowyd Ballantyne.

A memorial service will be held December 1, 1pm at Harmony Hall in Hamilton, VA. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
