Dorothy Moore Whelan died on November 7, 2012 peacefully of natural causes at her residential care home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Dorothy Mae Moore was born and raised in Oregon, and was proud to be a descendant of Oregon pioneers. She attended nurses’ training at Emmanuel Hospital in Portland. Upon graduation, she was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy. At Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, CA she met and married USN Pharmacist Edward A. Whelan on May 3, 1946. The newlyweds settled in Escondido, CA where Mr. Whelan began his civilian pharmacist career at Ting’s Pharmacy, raised four children, and enjoyed their life together for 58 years until Mr. Whelan’s death in 2004.
Dorothy was an intelligent, strong, and forthright person who enjoyed bridge, reading, and opera. She is survived by sons E. John Whelan of Sacramento, CA and Dennis Moore Whelan of Santa Barbara, CA; daughters Kathleen Whelan Leopard (Kevin) of Leesburg, VA and Sheana Whelan Funkhouser (Bill) of Chapel Hill, NC; grandchildren Terens Whelan, Colleen Whelan, Margaret Funkhouser, Keith Funkhouser and Eleanor Funkhouser; siblings Lewis M. “Jack” Moore (Patricia) of Eugene, OR, and Barbara Moore Gibbs (Gordon) of Clovis, CA. She was predeceased by her other brother, Kenneth P. Moore.
