CHAPEL HILL - A 23-year-old man was killed Friday night in a head-on collision on Erwin Road that also injured two UNC School of Medicine professors.
Mario Delmonico Giovanni Boni, of Los Angeles, was killed when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck another car, N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Lee Councilman said. Boni was estimated to be traveling at 70 mph, and speed is considered a factor in the accident, he said. The speed limit on Erwin Road is 45 mph.
“It’s been a tough week in Orange County. We’ve lost a lot of young people, Councilman said.
Chapel Hill residents Matthew Anthony Mauro, who was driving the other car, and his wife, Patricia Marchase Mauro, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Councilman said.
Matthew Mauro, 61, was taken to Duke Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Wednesday. He is the chairman of the at UNC School of Medicine’s radiology department and the Ernest H. Wood Distinguished Professor of Radiology and Surgery.
Patricia Mauro was treated at UNC Hospitals and was listed in good condition. She is an associate professor in UNC’s dermatology department and was the co-founder of Durham Dermatology Associates, where she practiced medicine for 28 years.
Boni, who was a native of Santa Monica, Calif., was spending Christmas with his family in Durham. His family moved to Durham in 2003, where he attended Jordan High School and completed a high school degree at Durham Technical Community College.
He returned to Los Angeles, where he earned a certificate from UCLA’s program of recording arts and was pursuing a music production career.
“He was magic with the (sound) board,” his father John Boni said.
He also is survived by his mother Donna Boni and two sisters.
The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main St., Durham.
