Lucien C. Faust died unexpectedly on December 22, 2012 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC.
He was born in Glendale, California, to Dorothy Shaw Faust and John Bernard Faust. As the son of a State Department diplomat, he grew up in many places, including France, Portugal, Chile, Honduras, South Carolina, California, New York and Lebanon. Lucien graduated from Stanford University in 1953, before serving in the Army from 1954 to 1955 in Germany and California. He received a Masters in City and Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959. He worked as a planner for Charlotte and Chapel Hill, and as the Planning Director for the City of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from 1966 to 1996.
Lucien was inquisitive about a tremendous variety of topics including the science of space exploration, technology, current events, and anthropology. He was an avid reader. He practiced meditation for over 40 years. His interest in global issues fostered ongoing correspondence with the alumni of the American Community School of Beirut, Lebanon, where he graduated in 1949. For many years he was an active member of Kiwanis and Toastmasters. In retirement in the Triangle area of North Carolina, he attended courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University for 10 years, enjoying the wide variety of topics offered, in particular memoir-writing courses and symposia. Lucien published his own memoir in 2012: To the Golden Years, and Beyond. What It’s Been Like.
Lucien was devoted to his family and is survived by his companion and wife of 52 years, Rosmarie A. Fussenegger Faust; daughter Annamarie Streilein and former husband Robert Streilein of Durham, North Carolina; son John Faust and partner Corey McCannon of Oakland, California; and daughter Susan Eissenberg and husband Michael Eissenberg of Evergreen, Colorado; grandchildren Jacob, Madeline and Peter Streilein and Emily and Dorothy Anna Eissenberg; his sister Claire McMurray and husband Clifford McMurray of Norman, Oklahoma; niece Fern Thung and nephew Owen Stephens of Norman, Oklahoma. Lucien’s brother, Owen Faust, preceded him in death.
Family and friends will gather for a celebration of Lucien’s life at Carol Woods Retirement Community on Sunday, January 20 at 2:00 pm.
