Hurricane Jr. Golf: The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour has added three North Carolina stops this year. Upcoming events for 2013 include: March 2-3 at Lochmere Club in Cary; April 27-28 at N.C. KOC Free Throws: The annual Knights of Columbus Chapel Hill-Carrboro Free throw Contest will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, in the new St. Thomas More Gymnasium. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., competition at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded in five age groups for both boys and girls ages 10-14, and the public is invited to the open event. Winners will advance to the district tournament. Entry forms, including a parent’s signature and proof of age, must be brought to the contest. Forms are available in the St. Thomas More school offices and at the church’s reception desk. They will also be available on the day of the contest. Carrboro Spring Baseball: Registration has opened for the Carrboro Recreation Department’s Spring Baseball Program for participants 6-15 years old. Separate leagues will be formed for ages 6-12 and 13-15. The age cut off is as of Aug. 31, 2012. The fee is $58 for Orange County residents, $95 for out of county residents. Sign up online through an existing registration account or in the office at the Recreation Department, 100 N. Greensboro St. Carrboro. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Little River Trail Runs: The eighth annual Little River Trail Runs – 7K and 10-mile races – will be held Jan. 19 at the beautiful Little River Regional Park on the border between Durham and Orange Counties. Both the 7K and 10-mile course are comprised of gently rolling single-track trails with beautiful views of the river and natural areas. Both courses will be well marked with aid stations. Sunday basketball clinics: The Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring a series of Basketball instructional clinics on Sunday, Jan. 20 (shooting) and Jan. 27 (dibbling / passing / rebounding). Age groupings are 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12 years old. The fee is $15 per person. Registration will begin Wednesday, Jan. 2 for Carrboro residents and Thursday, Jan. 3 for others at the Recreation Department, 100 N. Greensboro St., Carrboro. Pre-registration is required. Community Couch-to-5K:Orange County Recreation is organizing a running program designed to assist new runners with being active while achieving the goal of running a 5K race. "Couch-to-5K" is a class where participants will gradually increase the length of their runs over a two-month period. Group sessions will run 7-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 19 through April 18, at the Eurosport Soccer Center; participants will be expected to complete a third day of training each week on their own time. St. Paul 5K: The Saint Paul Village Community Walk and 5K Run will be held on March 2, starting at 8 a.m. at McDougle School. Participants will walk/run this 3.1 mile course through three neighborhoods near the school in Carrboro. Cardinal Race Services will be providing electronic timing for each participant. Go to

Cardinals Lacrosse: North Chatham Cardinals Youth Lacrosse has opened registration for its 2013 Spring Boys Lacrosse program. Limited spots are available still for the Cardinals’ teams for grades K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and middle school. All teams will participate in the Carolina Youth Lacrosse Association (
www.carolinalax.org), and all games will be played under the direction of NCHSAA certified officials. Protective gear and a stick are required. For players lacking some equipment, season rentals are available. To sign up online or for more information, see or email

Volunteer Coaching: The Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is currently accepting volunteer coach’s applications for 2013 Youth Baseball (ages 6-15) and Youth Girls Volleyball (ages 10-13). Coaches must exhibit the ability to organize practices and communicate effectively with young players, parents, and Recreation Department staff. They must also exhibit the ability to teach proper playing skills and fundamentals, sportsmanship, and provide an enjoyable atmosphere at practices and games.
