Save racquetball?

The YMCA’s plan to demolish its racquetball courts to make room for more fitness equipment and workout space has drawn a strong response from the sport’s devotees. Little River Trail Runs: The eighth annual Little River Trail Runs – 7K and 10-mile races – will be held Jan. 19 on the gently rolling hills of single-track paths inside the beautiful Little River Regional Park on the border between Durham and Orange Counties. Both courses will be well marked with aid stations. For more information, see www.trailheads.org/lrtr/.

Hot Stove Banquet: The Carolina Baseball Club will hold fourth annual Hot Stove Banquet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 26, in Fetzer Hall on UNC’s Chapel Hill campus. UNC head lacrosse coach Joe Breschi will be the featured speaker. The night includes a silent auction of miscellaneous goods including sports memorabilia, a raffle of fabulous prizes and exceptional food. All net proceeds benefit the Carolina Baseball Club, a not-for-profit, all-volunteer youth baseball organization. Seating is limited. Purchase your tickets at carolinabaseballclub.org.

Carrboro Co-Rec Softball: Registration is open for the Carrboro Recreation Department’s 2013 Spring Co-Rec Softball League. The adult co-ed league will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April through JuneA team fee of $625 is required, with a non-refundable deposit of $200 due at registration. An extra out-of-county fee of $37 is required for all participants residing outside of Orange County. For more information, call 919-918-7364.

Sunday basketball clinics: The Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department will host a series of basketball instructional clinics on Sunday, Jan. 20 (shooting) and Jan. 27 (dibbling / passing / rebounding). Age groupings are 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12 years old. The fee is $15 per person. Pre-registration is required. Community Couch-to-5K:Orange County Recreation is organizing a running program designed to assist new runners with the goal of entering a 5K race. Participants will gradually increase the length of their runs during a two-month period. Group sessions will run 7-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 19 through April 18, at the Eurosport Soccer Center. For information, see www.co.orange.nc.us/recparks/.
