CHAPEL HILL - Attending the NCHSAA’s post-season regionals and state championships almost seems like a birthright to East Chapel Hill swimmers.

After sweeping the Piedmont Athletics Conference boys’ and girls’ championships last week in Chapel Hill, most of the 2013 Wildcats will be swimming in next weekend’s regional meet in Greensboro.

“I thought the PAC meet went extremely well with so many swimmers on vacation for the long (Martin Luther King holiday) weekend,” East Chapel Hill coach Lyn Smith said.

Much the same was true for Carrboro and Chapel Hill high schools.

The Chapel Hill women won the Carolina-6 meet Tuesday in Cary’s Triangle Aquatic Center by a hefty margin (703-616) over runner-up Cardinal Gibbons, and the CHHS boys (644.5) finished second in a closer race with the Crusaders (699).

The Tigers and other Carolina-6 qualifiers return to the Triangle Aquatic Center to swim Saturday in the NCHSAA East 3A Regional. Carrboro will swim in the NCHSAA 1A-2A East Regional on Friday afternoon in the TAC. East’s Wildcats have been assigned to the NCHSAA 4A Central Regional that starts Saturday morning in the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Swimming Tuesday at the Sportsplex in Hillsborough, the defending state 2A champions from Carrboro and Raleigh Charter both won Carolina-12 Conference titles: Carrboro’s boys won their title with 182.5 points to the 177 for second-place N.C. Science and Math; the Raleigh Charter girls won their meet with 216 points while Carrboro was second with 109.

East Chapel Hill’s overwhelming performance Tuesday in Koury Natatorium went just as expected by the PAC-6 coaches. Winning both the boys’ and girls’ titles, the Wildcats won every individual event but three. Northern Durham’s Connor Williams won the boys’ 200 and 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

East’s boys won with 707 points to the 557 for Jordan in second place. Koya Osada of East won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, and he swam on the winning 200 medley relay and climatic 400 freestyle relay.

The East girls — led by double-winners Morgan Smith (200, 400 freestyle) and Caroline Liu (100 breaststroke and 100 back) — swamped runner-up Jordan 734-489.

In all, 48 Wildcat swimmers recorded personal bests, and 36 of them hit good enough times to be considered for next weekend’s regionals, Smith noted. Only those with a top-24 time in a region can compete, so the ‘Cats are still waiting to see who makes it to the next round.

“I had swimmers swimming some events for the first time this season and some others in their very first relay of the season, just to get my entries in,” Smith said. “The team truly stepped up on this meet – covering for our vacancies – swimming through tough practices without any taper.”
