In an age when many high school athletes opt to concentrate on one sport in hopes of signing with a college program, Louis Levin still plays soccer and basketball and starts for both the East Chapel Hill teams in those sports.

Nicknamed: “Big Lou Number” 2 by his soccer teammates.

His role: Levin is the playmaker — not the go-to guy, but the man who gets the ball to the go-to guy. In soccer, he was a center-midfielder on the Wildcat soccer team that enjoyed its best season ever (17-2-2) as a 4A program and reached the state semifinals. In basketball, he’s started as a point guard, averaging a healthy 3.2 assists a game.

Similarities between the sports? “The passing. I’ve learned from both sports, and I think I’m a pretty good passer in both. Playing both has helped me to see the open people and the open spaces. The challenge is to see the open person.”

If not soccer or basketball: “I’d play baseball. I played it a lot as a kid.”

Best moment in sports: “In soccer, it was when we won at Jordan (in 2011) and won the PAC-6 (Conference) for the first time. In basketball, it was when we won the conference tournament my sophomore year. … I didn’t even play in that game, but it was a great win.”

And this season: “It would have to be the Chapel Hill win.” (Levin hit a driving lay-up with two second left, his only basket of the game, to spark East to a 38-34.win Nov. 29 over CHHS. With a fraction of a second left, he fed his fourth assist of the night to Justen Best for a game-clinching jumper.)

Next year’s plans: The son of Robert Levin and Berta Kittner. he’s not sure yet whether to attend college next semester or do a post-grad year of prep school, but he’s sure he wants to continue in athletics at the next level.

Pregame ritual: Watching opponent’s outstanding players on YouTube.

Team I love to play: Jordan High School

Favorite class at East: Strength and conditioning. “I know, I know. But that’s my favorite, really.”

Favorite teacher: Evon Barnes, English Lit.

His favorite athlete: Danny Green, UNC basketball player, 2005-09.

Famous person met: “Dean Smith’s wife when I was a kid. She said I was ‘cute.’”

Pick a super-power: flying.

Favorite Movie in last 12 months: “Skyfall”

Can’t stand: “Scary movies.”

Favorite food: steak and potatoes.

If I had $1 million: “I’d buy a car, take the family out to dinner, and we’d figure out what to do with the rest.”

Pick anyone, ever, to join at dinner: “Grandfather, Harry Kittner. He dies just last fall and I wish I could see him again.”

Biggest fan: “My grandfather, Harry Levin. He comes to all my games. (Yes, Harry. We just called my grandfathers ‘The Harries.’)”

Can’t live without: “My family.”

How to pronounce Levin: “I’ve got relatives who pronounce it ‘lah-VEHN’ and some who pronounce it ‘lah-VEEN.’ We say ‘LEH-vehn.’”

People don’t know: “I love old TV. I watch Adam-12 and Dragnet all the time. I grew up with ‘Andy Griffith’, ‘I Love Lucy’ and ‘Leave It To Beaver.’”
