A petition has been created on the White House's web site that asks Dean Smith be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Supporters note that Smith (shown center in this 2010 photo) not only was the winningest NCAA Div. I basketball coach when he retired, but more importantly he was a champion of civil rights and helped integrate basketball in the South.
