Today's Best Shot comes from reader Skip Anderson, who photographed this hummingbird moth about six weeks ago in Cortona, Italy (home to Frances Mayes of "Under The Tuscan Sun," also from Hillsborough). "This moth is smaller than a regular humming bird and very fast," he writes. "I chased him all around the lavender plant several times before I caught this shot. It is interesting to note that in unabridged copies of Roger Tory Petersen's "Birds of North America," this insect appears on the same page as real hummingbirds because they are so often confused. The antenna are the giveaway!"
Send your Best Shots to email@example.com. Please tell us your name, where you live and took the shot, and a little about it. When you send us a photo, you are giving us permission to publish it in print and online. Thanks.
