Former East Chapel Hill coach dies

Funeral services are planned Thursday for former East Chapel Hill coach Chris Smith. He died Saturday in Durham, age 54.

Smith arrived at East Chapel Hill High School in 2000, where he served as head wrestling coach and an assistant football coach. He also was an assistant principal at East before he retired in 2010.

Prior to his arrival at East Chapel Hill, Smith was at Southern Alamance High School, where he served as the track and field coach 1983-94 and as an assistant coach for the football and wrestling teams most of those years.

Smith moved into administration in 1994 but remained an assistant coach with the Southern Alamance football team until he left for East Chapel Hill.

A visitation will be held at noon Thursday, followed by funeral at 1 p.m. at North East Baptist Church, 3204 N.C. 55, Durham.
