Beverly "Bev" Baylor Carmichael

Mary Beverly “Bev” Baylor Carmichael died on September 10 in Chapel Hill, her home since coming to town as a coed in 1949. Born in Charlotte and raised in Greensboro, Beverly was a 1953 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She attended the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and held positions as a reporter and desk, associate, managing and interim editor of the University’s Daily Tar Heel newspaper, one of the first women to appear so high on the masthead. She also was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. Beverly worked in advertising at WCHL and volunteered with many local service organizations, including the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties. She was married to Billy Carmichael III. Beverly is survived by her daughters Clay Carmichael and husband Mike Roig of Carrboro; and Marnie Carmichael, husband Michael Murphy and grandchildren Ella Murphy of New Orleans, and Austin and wife Jacy Murphy-Park of New York; niece Margot Lester and husband Steve Peha also of Carrboro; nephew Brooks Lester, wife Laura Edgerton and grand-niece Kate Lester of Raleigh. A private service is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite local charity. Arrangements by Walker’s Funeral Home, Chapel Hill.
