CHAPEL HILL — Police continue to investigate the wreck that killed a Chapel Hill woman Wednesday night near University Mall.
Lisa Renee Baldwin, 41, of 107 Creel St., Apt. A, was struck around 8:24 p.m. at the intersection of South Estes Drive and Fordham Boulevard. She died at the scene from her injuries, police reported.
Police spokesman Sgt. Bryan Walker said a preliminary investigation indicates that Baldwin was attempting to cross Fordham Boulevard against the light. She was hit by a 31-year-old Chapel Hill woman driving northbound on Fordham Boulevard, he said.
“We suspect that Ms. Baldwin may have been impaired based on statements from witnesses, but we will not know until toxicology results are returned. There was no indication of impairment from the driver of the vehicle,” Walker said.
N.C. Department of Correction records show Baldwin had a 20-year history of substance abuse and criminal activities, including larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia, trespassing and assault.
No charges have been filed, and there were no other injuries, Walker said. The damage to the driver’s car was estimated at $5,000, he said.
