Man killed, woman injured while riding bicycles on Thursday night

From staff reportsSeptember 22, 2013

— A man from Carrboro was killed and a woman from the town was seriously hurt when a car hit them from behind while they were riding bicycles on U.S. 15-501 just south of Chapel Hill on Thursday night, the Highway Patrol said Friday.

Troopers said the car that hit the two should have front-end and windshield damage, based on evidence found at the scene, but no one reported seeing the accident, and troopers had no description of the car they were trying to find.

Ivin Levander Scurlock, 41, was dead at the scene when authorities found him in the road.

Troopers said Alexandria Nicole Simou, 40, was in the intensive-care unit of UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Friday.

The two were believed to have been hit about 11:30 p.m. The Highway Patrol was trying to re-enact what might have happened and thinks they were hit by a smaller car based on how they landed.

The pair was riding south and were near the Southern Village development and were just outside the Chapel Hill town limits, troopers said.

The Highway Patrol asked that anyone with information that could help the investigation contact the Hillsborough Highway Patrol station at 919-732-2551 or the Raleigh Highway Patrol Communication Center at 919-733-3861.
