Helen Gayle Hamel Honse

Helen Gayle Hamel Honse, 103, passed away on October 4, 2013 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina at the home she shared with her daughter, Mary Lu Salmon. Gayle was born on January 2, 1910 in Mount Pleasant PA to the late Jessie Hays Hamel and the late William Karl Hamel. She grew up in Laurelville Pennsylvania and graduated from Ramsey High school and Slippery Rock College.

Gayle was preceded in death by her husband Jay Goodwin Honse Sr. and five siblings: Karl Hamel, John Hamel, Dana Hamel, Ruth Scheidemantle, and Lillian Hoke.

She was an elementary school teacher in Pennsylvaniain the Mount Pleasant area schools and also at Ruffsdale Elementary. She loved her students and in later years enjoyed telling stories about them and the rural schools she taught in. After living in Pennsylvania and raising her family she moved to Greensboro, North Carolina and then Chapel Hill, North Carolina to be close to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always interested in everything the children were doing and loved seeing and talking with them.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lu Salmon of Chapel Hill, NC and her son, Jay G Honse Jr and wife Betty of Fincastle VA, two grandsons, Jay G Honse III of Midlothian, VA and Jon Bradburn Honse and wife Jenea of Youngsville, NC. Great-grandchildren include: Rosslyn and Lillian Honse of Midlothian, VA, Helen, Jack, Peter and Charles Honse of Youngsville, NC. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Carrboro United Methodist Church, 200 Hillsborough Road, Carrboro, North Carolina 27510. 919-942-1223.
