Amtrak train hits, kills 1 near Mebane

— One person was struck and killed Sunday morning by an Amtrak train at the Buckhorn Road crossing near the Orange-Alamance county line.

The victim’s identity has not been released. According to an Amtrak spokesman, the victim was standing on the tracks when hit by the Carolinian passenger train around 9:20 a.m.

The crossing is equipped with lights and stop arms.

There were 118 passengers on board the train, which left Charlotte this morning bound for New York, the spokesman said. No other injuries were reported.

The train, which was scheduled to stop in Raleigh at 10:25 a.m., was being delayed while officials finished their investigation, the spokesman said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office also is investigating.
