No one can remember the last time East Chapel Hill lost a conference swimming meet.
The Wildcats certainly haven’t lost since they joined the PAC-6 in 2005.
“I don’t remember losing a conference meet in nine years,” East Chapel Hill coach Lyn Smith said. “It is a matter of pride at this point, because we had had such great success in really tight meets during the past nine years.
That doesn’t mean the Wildcats, especially a young group like this year’s team, take anything for granted.
“We take conference meets seriously, as well as other meets, because every time we dive into the pool our swimmers are going for an automatic or consideration cut time,” Smith said.
East doesn’t get to a conference opponent until Dec. 17, when it swims in the Homestead Aquatic Center against PAC-6 member Durham Riverside and 3A Chapel Hill.
East Chapel Hill easily won a non-conference tri-meet last week, overwhelming Northwood and the Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill.
Matching up their results against each school in order, the East girls defeated Trinity 128-35 and Northwood 129-16.
East’s won the boys’ meets 114-56 over Trinity and 116-52 over Northwood.
East Chapel Hill won every relay for both males and females, and three Wildcats came up double-winners.
Morgan Smith won both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly for East and swam on the winning 200 and 400 free relays.
Koya Osada was first in both the 200 free and 100 backstroke. He also led off East’s winning boys’ 200 medley relay and anchored the 400 free relay.
Oliver Hudgins won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly for East, and he swam on both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.
Individual winners for East included Michael Wohl in the 100 free. An East junior who won silver for the USA in the free relays at last summer’s Maccabiah Games, Wohl swam on both of the winning free relays Tuesday joined by Osada, Hudgins and Liam McCullough on both.
East junior Bijan Zakerin won the boys’ 500 free individually and swam on the winning 200 free relay with Conor Guest, Martin Cho and James Gildard.
Individual winners among the East girls included ninth-grader Annie Huang in the 50 free and CeCe Marzinsky in the 100 free. They both swam on the winning 400 free relay, along with Chelsea Yu and Smith.
Trinity senior Emily Sarratt broke up what otherwise was a sweep by the Wildcats of every event. Sarratt, recently signed by the University of Louisville’s swimming program, won the girls’ individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
Northwood had even more to cheer about. Sophomore Josh Conger won two events for the Chargers: the 500 free style and 100 breaststroke. Junior teammate Rory O’Dell won the girls 100 backstroke, and ninth-grader Sarah Shepherd won the 500 free.
