Winter Weather

Chapel Hill and Carrboro may not get as much accumulation overnight as shown in this AP file photo from New Jersey, but Wednesday night will be cold enough to keep the area icy for a while.

The approaching inclement weather has prompted cancellation of all Tuesday sporting activities for Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County schools.

That includes several high school basketball games and the Mid-State Conference swimming championships that had been scheduled for Tuesday evening at Homestead Aquatic Center.

Officials will have to see the road conditions Wednesday before making a call on the PAC-6 and Big Eight Conference swimming championships, as well as some high school wrestling meets, that were scheduled for Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says rain will moved into the area around 4 p.m. and rapidly change to light snow late Wednesday afternoon and into the evening as a strong northerly win tracks through the Carolinas. Wind chills will be in the single digits.
