Orange County FAQ on storm-debris removal

— Orange County Emergency Services is seeking federal assistance related to the March 6-7 ice storm.

Gov. Pat McCrory requested a federal disaster declaration on Tuesday to help nine central North Carolina counties recoup some of their costs.

Damage-assessment teams estimate the ice storm response and recovery cost state and local governments $26.9 million.They found enough damage to request assistance for Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person and Randolph counties.

If the governor’s request is approved, federal money could pay up to 75 percent of the costs of emergency protective measures, repairs to local electric cooperatives infrastructure and tree and limb debris removal. Initial reports estimate between 750,000 to 1 million cubic yards of debris needed to be removed from personal and public properties in the nine requested counties.

Orange County provided the followng FAQ.

Q: When will the debris be picked up from my street?

A: It is anticipated N.C. DOT will have contractors in place to pick up debris from properties located on state maintained roads in the County beginning this week. Only debris placed on the side of the road will be picked up.

Q: Where should I take my storm debris?

A: The Orange County Landfill at 1514 Eubanks Road will accept loads of all sizes, from trucks and trailers to dump trucks, on up. Loads must be covered, tied or otherwise secured to prevent spillage during transportation.

• Pick-up Truck Load or Trailer not over 10 feet long and less than 1,000 pounds: $8

• Per ton (1-ton minimum charge for larger loads): $18

• The Orange County Landfill has extended hours to receive storm debris until further notice: Saturday – 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday-Friday – 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Solid Waste Convenience Centers are for residential waste only. They do not have the capacity, to receive large quantities of storm debris. There are five centers in Orange County and all of them except the center located on Bradshaw Quarry Road accept limited quantities vegetative waste. The following guidelines apply:

• Frequency limit one load per week day or weekend period. Load being either one (1) acceptable vehicle load or one (1) acceptable trailer load, not a combination of both.

• Acceptable vehicles and trailers: Trucks whose volume of material does not exceed 4.5 cubic yards or 120 cubic feet. Trailers, 10 feet long or less.

Q: I had to complete some repairs to my home. Can I throw leftover materials on the side of the road for DOT to pick up?

A: No. Only vegetation debris shorter than 10 feet in length will be removed.

Q: I live on a private road. Will my debris be collected?

A: Not at this time. Options may be available for debris cleanup and pickup through your homeowner’s insurance.
