John Stephen Akin, Jr.

John “Stephen” Akin, Jr., aka Stakin, King, Daddy, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014. Born February 21, 1965 in Atlanta, GA Stephen called Chapel Hill, NC home and graduated from Chapel Hill High School and UNC-Chapel Hill. Stephen was hilarious, warm, loving and a deeply emotional soul whose passion for music was rivaled only by his passion for his UNC Tar Heels. The front-man for the band A Number of Things and the “sixth man,” sound engineer and road manager for Chapel Hill’s Sex Police, Stephen was widely considered a pillar of the Chapel Hill music scene from the early 80s until his death.

For the past twelve years, Stephen worked as the Box Office Manager for PlayMakers Repertory Company. Prior to that, he could be found working atHenry’s Bistro and School Kids Records or holding court at the Cat’s Cradle or Pepper’s Pizza, making his one of the most recognizable faces in Chapel Hill.

Stephen was one of a kind and his beloved hometown of Chapel Hill will never be quite the same. He is survived by his wife, Andrea, their three year-old son Charlie, his parents, John and Ella, and legions of devoted friends, family and coworkers.

A memorial service will be held for his family and friends on April 13 at 5pm at the Haw River Ballroom. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation.
