— Josh Oakley withstood an intense challenge Saturday night from Chuck Lawson to win the Sherry Johnson Memorial late model stock car race at Orange County Speedway.

The two battled side by side from lap 38 to 63 in the 75-lap event before Lawson, the 2012 points champion, faded. Mike Chambers of Timberlake passed Lawson late to secure second position.

It was the first late-model win at Orange County Speedway for Chambers, whose best finish in the division last year was third.

In an earlier 35-lapper for the track’s limited sportsman division, Lawson was disqualified for rough driving after an incident involving himself and race leader Joey Thockmorton of South Boston, Va.

After contact between the two drivers, Throckmorton slammed into the first turn wall, which destroyed his No. 21 car.

Durham driver Brandon Baker moved into first after the crash and went on to record the limited sportsman victory.

Throckmorton was reported okay after the scary crash.

In other races: Richard Hayden held off a hard charging Jerry Wilkerson to win the 25-lap street stock affair; Junior Chriscoe edged Wesley Martin for the 20-lap super mini truck triumph; and Brandon Watson took a career first victory in the 25-lap pure stock event.

Racers will take Easter weekend off and return to Rougemont the following Saturday with events for late models, limited, pure stock, street stock and super mini trucks.
