“At the end, there’s this really good message of girls sticking together,” says Sadie Franks, with Tom Shaw. ‘Legally Blonde: The Musical’ runs for three nights starting Thursday at Chapel Hill High’s Hanes Theatre.

— Sadie Frank of Carrboro listened to the songs of ‘Legally Blonde: The Musical’ every night when she was in third grade until she knew them by heart.

Now she’s playing the irrepressible Elle Woods in Chapel Hill High’s production of the hit Broadway musical, based on the book by Amanda Brown and 2001 movie.

“The great thing is that on the surface it’s about this ditzy blonde, but underneath there’s a message,” says the 16-year-old junior. “Even if you’re blonde and super hot and like to party all the time, you can be a very smart lawyer and be successful, with a chihuahua.”

Except in this version, the role of the chihuahua is played by a Boston bull terrier.

“Legally Blonde,” runs 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday; $7 for students, $12 for adults. Theater director Thomas Drago says he was looking for a crowd pleaser to help fill the Hanes Theatre’s 760 seats.

The productions get no money from the school system, Drago said. Bigs shows – this one has 105 cast and crew members and 800 costume pieces – help pay for the smaller and more provocative shows the department also does. (Think “Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog” or “Urinetown.”)

“It’s all about ticket sales,” he said. “If we can get 500 to 600 people a night, we’ll be in good shape.”
