Gibbons takes out Northwood

Cardinal Gibbons (21-1-2) recorded its 19th shutout of the season and its seventh straight with a 2-0 NCHSAA 3A second-round soccer win over Northwood. Gibbons was expecting to meet Chapel Hill in the third round. See www.nchsaa.com for results and pairings.

Wildcats stumble against Raleigh Millbrook

East Chapel Hill (11-6) overcame a five-run deficit in the first-inning and led by the fourth inning Wednesday, but Millbrook (14-8) pounced on a series of East errors to regain the lead and took an 11-8 win in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A softball playoffs.

“That first inning was a little rough getting down, but the kids hung in there and fought back,” East Chapel Hill coach Joe Simmons said. “I was really proud of them. We’ve been down like that before, so I wasn’t too worried about that, but I didn’t know how much we had left in us, because being out there that long in the field takes its toll on the body, and it kind of showed up late in the game.”
