John Christopher

John Christopher, a longtime resident of Chapel Hill, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a 13 year battle with cancer.

John was born in Athens Greece in 1925. He came to the United States with his wife Maria in 1955. He received his Bachelor and Masters degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and taught Mathematics at Durham Technical Community College for more than 25 years. He was also the author of technical mathematics textbooks despite starting his undergraduate studies at age 30 with very limited knowledge of English.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Maria Contou Christopher, his daughter Katherine (Tika) Barron and her husband David Mitchell (Mitch) Barron, his son Philip John Christoper and his wife Caroline Massey Christopher and his four beloved grandchildren Christopher, Scott, Eleanor, and Rachel. They will miss their Papou and his chocolates, raspberries, and tomatoes.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate John's life will be held at St. Barbara Greek Church, 8306 NC Hwy 751 in Durham on June 6 at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to UNC Hospice,
