Priest named All-Academic

Sarah Priest of Chapel Hill is among three Tar Heel rowers who have earned spots on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Crew, announced Tuesday. Priest is a rising University of North Carolina senior who is majoring in exercise and sport science.

She was joined on the 2014 All-Academic rowing team by UNC teammates Allie Davis and Maria Santoyo, who both graduated in May. Santoyo earned the recognition for the second year in a row.

All three Tar Heels also earned CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors this season. Davis was the coxswain for the varsity eight, UNCs top boat, and Priest and Santoyo both were part of the V8 lineup throughout the season.

Haywood plays in CGA event

Drew Haywood of Chapel Hill carded a 39 last Sunday on the back nine at Bryan Park Golf Club and finished with an 88 total for 21st place in a large field of entrants at the Carolinas Golf Association’s one-day tournament in Browns Summit.

Dan Horan of Chapel Hill shot a 92 for eighth place in the Men's B Flight, one stroke and one place better than Chapel Hill's Adam Staelin.

Summer Fling horseshoes

Carrboro's "Summer Fling" horseshoes tournament will be held July 5 in Anderson Community Park, beginning with on-site registration 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The shoes start flying at 10 a.m. Pitchers will be divided into flights base on ringer percentage.

Open to anyone age 18 years or older, this is the second in Carrboro's four-tournament series, in which points are accumulated for year-end awards. The series continues in August with the Hot Stob and concludes with October's Fall Classic. Trophies are awarded at each individual tournament.

Entry for the Summer Fling costs $14 per participant, plus a $22 charge for those who are not yet members of the N.C. Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

Chapel Hill Rec football

The Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department has opened registration for youth football (ages 5-12) and cheerleading. Registration will continue until July 25 or when the teams are full.
