With a bang after all

The ancient Mayan calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012. And because it’s safe to assume that the ancient Mayans were all-knowing, that can only mean one thing: The world as we know it will end that day. So why not go out with a bang? The ArtsCenter will mark the big event with “Apocalesque!,” a cabaret and variety show based on transformation and the end of the world, at 8 p.m. Dec. 21. Tori Sparks’ recordings are fiery and surprising, and her live shows are a whole different level: terrific songs sung by a powerhouse vocalist, plus a healthy dose of impromptu comic riffing and audience interaction. Sparks will be at Local 506 tonight. She’s worth the trip. Published: Dec. 18, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

Big lineup set for KidZNotes benefit concert

Thirty high school singers from The Chorus Project will perform at The Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro on Dec. 17 as part of a benefit concert to support KidZNotes, a Durham-based orchestral music program for low-income students. Published: Dec. 12, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

Nothing says Christmas like fried chicken and ‘naner puddin,’ so you could hardly do better this holiday season than to take a break from the mall and groove to some deep-fried swamp boogie with Southern Culture on the Skids at the Cat’s Cradle on Dec. 14. With New Town Drunks and Fantastico! on the bill, too, and a bake sale to benefit the Carrboro Food Bank, it’s practically a Christmas miracle. Published: Dec. 11, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

Peace on earth

By late December of 1914, although World War I was less than five months old, the conflict was already marked by ghastly slaughter. Allied and German troops were killing each other at an unprecedented rate; during one week-long battle alone, along the Marne River, more than half a million men were killed or wounded. Nashville singer-songwriter Will Hoge has seen his share of ups and downs, including a scooter accident in 2008 that nearly killed him and knocked his musical career onto the back burner for 10 months while he recovered. You can hear those hard times, and the good ones, in his rugged voice and heartfelt tunes. He’ll be at Local 506 tonight. Published: Dec. 4, 2012 7:00 PM | Full story

Jam for a good cause

It’s Thanksgiving week, and things are pretty quiet around here. Not for long, though; Saturday night the Cat’s Cradle presents its annual Post Turkey Day Jam (which used to be the Pre-Turkey Day Jam). The show will benefit the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, and will feature three sets of music. The first is a songwriters-in-the-round performance with a terrific lineup: Caitlin Cary, Chip Robinson, Lynn Blakey, Katharine Whalen and Jon Shain, who started this whole thing years ago. The Swang Brothers will take the stage after that, and the evening with wrap up with the Southern Appalachians-meet-Northern India fusion of Hindugrass. 919-967-9053, catscradle.com Published: Nov. 21, 2012 5:19 PM | Full story
