Ellen Ciompi will join Chris Reynolds' Swing N' Jazz Trio as guest vocalist Thursday at 6 p.m. at Capt. John's Dockside restaurant in Cole Park Plaza. Ciompi is an alumna of Yale University's prestigious Cabaret Conference and is the vocalist for Leon Jordan and His Continentals, a Raleigh-based ensemble which specializes in the music of the big band era. 968-7955.

Last August artist Gayle Stott Lowry went to Iceland, a rugged land of volcanoes and icebergs, icy waterfalls and steaming geothermal vents. On Saturday Tyndall Galleries in University Mall will hold an opening reception for an exhibit of new paintings inspired by that visit. The reception for 'Iceland: Land of Change and Volatility' will be from 7 to 9 p.m., and the show will be up until July 18. 942-2290,
