Holy Week services at Church of Advocate

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate in Carrboro will hold the following services this week in observance of Holy Week:
  • Today, 10 a.m. Conversation, Bible study and prayer with infants and toddlers and their families at the Church of the Advocate office, 403 W. Weaver St., Carrboro.
  • Thursday, 6:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday service at Camp New Hope will include dinner fellowship (food provided), foot washing and Holy Eucharist. Bring a flashlight. Camp New Hope is at 4805 N.C. 86.
  • Friday, noon. Good Friday walk through downtown Carrboro with pauses for readings, reflection and prayer. Participants will take turns carrying the cross. Meet at Carrboro Town Hall at 301 West Main St., or join during the walk. No dogs.
  • Friday, 8 to 11 p.m. Good Friday wake for sharing stories of Jesus, readings from Scripture and Christian tradition and meditation on the events of Holy Week, at the Church of the Advocate office.
  • Saturday, 9 p.m. The Great Vigil of Easter will celebrate the resurrection in the darkness of night. If possible, bring a bell, horn or whistle to accompany the Paschal Shout. The vigil will be at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, corner of Mason Farm and Purefoy roads.

Holy Week events at Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 E. Rosemary St., will hold Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services this week at noon and 7:30 p.m. each day

An Easter Vigil will take place Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Easter Services will be Sunday at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

First Baptist holds Holy Week services

First Baptist Church, 106 N. Roberson St., will host Holy Week services today, Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m.

The associate ministers will deliver the evening messages. Everyone is welcome.

United Church marks Holy Week

United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will hold a Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. this week.

A family-friendly Good Friday service will begin at noon. The Good Friday service, a quiet and meditative service, will begin at 7:30 p.m.

A family-friendly Easter vigil will begin Saturday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, an Easter sunrise service will begin at 7 a.m. in the Memorial Garden, followed by Easter breakfast at 7:30.

Easter worship services will be at 8:45 and 11 a.m. The United Voices of Praise gospel choir and the Brass Ensemble and Bronze Voices hand-bell choir will play during the 8:45 service. The Chancel Choir and Chamber Singers will sing during the 11 a.m. service.

Easter brunch will be served at 10 a.m.

United Church will host Ulrich Cyganek, director of church music for the Protestant Church of the Rheinland, during Holy Week. The Spanish-language worship service will be Sunday at 11 a.m. in the new Assembly Hall.

Sermon shaping meetings are held every Wednesday at 7 a.m. in the library. One of the pastors joins the group to look at the lectionary texts for the next Sunday.

Series to study meaning of Methodism

The Rev. Verson Tyson leads a series called "What Does It Mean to Be a Methodist Christian in 2008" on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Amity United Methodist Church, 825 Estes Drive. The series will continue through April 29.

The Palm Sunday worship service will be Sunday at 11 a.m. Sunday School starts at 9:45 a.m.

Binkley Baptist events, services mark Holy Week

Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, will observe Holy Week with special events and services this week.

The Holy Week Ecumenical labyrinth opens daily at 6:30 a.m. and continues through 1 p.m.

The Maundy Thursday agape meal and service will be held Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Good Friday service will be at noon Friday.

Easter sunrise service is at 7 a.m., followed by Easter breakfast at 9:30 and worship at 11.

Maundy Thursday event will feature Bach music

University United Methodist Church, 150 E. Franklin St., will hold a Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m., featuring the music of Bach.

Good Friday worship will be from noon to 3 p.m., featuring mediations on "The Last Seven Words of Christ," along with a short liturgy and music.

Easter sunrise service will be held in the courtyards Sunday at 7 a.m., followed by breakfast at Jack Sprat Cafe. Worship services will be held Sunday at 8:30 and 10:55 a.m., and a fellowship time will be at 9:45 a.m.

Holy Week services at Chapel of the Cross

The Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St., will hold Easter Sunday services of Holy Eucharist at 7:30, 9 and 11:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. There also will be a service of Holy Eucharist at 4 p.m. at Carol Woods Retirement Center. A service of Sung Compline will begin at 9:30 p.m. in the church.

Brief services of Evening Prayer will be held in the chapel Monday and Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

Christian education classes will not meet on Easter Sunday.

The weekly Tuesday Morning Bible Study will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the parish library. The Centering Prayer Group will meet March 26 at 5 p.m. in the parish house.

Episcopal Campus Ministry will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the campus center for dinner, fellowship and worship. The program will focus on the group's recent mission trip to Honduras.

A social hour follows the conclusion of the 11:15 a.m. service each Sunday.

The Social Ministry Committee is accepting applications for funds from the parish's ABC (Attic, Basement, Closet) Sale to be held on April 12. Nonprofit organizations that address children's issues, education, mental and physical health, homelessness and poverty may obtain specific information about making applications from the parish office. Application forms are available on the parish Web site and in the parish office and are due by March 31. Donations of items in good condition will be received in the parish house beginning April 7.

Church of Reconciliation holds Holy Week services

The Presbyterian (USA) Church of Reconciliation, 110 N. Elliott Road, will hold Maundy Thursday worship at 7 p.m. and Good Friday worship at noon this week.

The Easter sunrise service will be Sunday at 7 a.m., and Easter Sunday worship will be at 11 a.m.

Holy Week services at Lystra Baptist

Lystra Baptist Church on Lystra Road will hold a Good Friday service at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

A sunrise service will be held Sunday at 7 a.m. in the cemetery, followed by breakfast in the fellowship hall. There will be a celebration of the resurrection at 9 a.m. including a flower cross and Easter music.


Easter events planned at Amity

Amity United Methodist Church, 825 N. Estes Drive, will hold an Easter cantata and Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday at 7 p.m.

Easter sunrise service will be held Sunday at 7:30 a.m., followed by breakfast. Sunday school and an Easter egg hunt will begin at 9:45 a.m. and the Easter service will begin at 11.

Services, events at Unity Center

Sunday services at the Unity Center of Peace Church, 8800 Seawell School Road, are from 11 a.m. to noon. The Adult Forum precedes the service each Sunday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.

Mark Malachi facilitates Jewish Erev Shabbat services on the last Friday of each month. The service begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes chanting, Hebrew prayers and music.

A healing circle meets weekly on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Course in Miracles continues on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 7:30 p.m.

Services held at Advent Lutheranzzz

Sunday services will begin at 10:25 a.m. at Advent Lutheran Church, 230 Erwin Road. Classes for all ages begin at 9 a.m.

The Lenten devotions series concludes tonight with a soup supper at 6:15, followed by services at 7. Choir practice follows.
