The Church of Reconciliation is presenting a series of environmental meetings on the theme of water on Sundays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

This Sunday, during the annual Environmental Sabbath service at New Hope Camp Conference Center, the guest speaker will be Dean Naujoks, riverkeeper of the Upper Neuse River. Naujoks will discuss human involvement in the health of watersheds. The Environmental Sabbath service will feature music by Herding Cats, Jeep Morrison's "brass ten-tet." Lunch will be served after the service. Bring a bagged lunch.

On April 27, storyteller Louise Kessel will present North Carolina water stories.

The Eco-Spirit Workshop "Earth" will be presented Saturday at the parish house chapel. Lunch will be included, and donations are welcomed.

Mount Carmel presents musical worship service

The ministry of music of Mount Carmel Baptist Church will lead the congregation in a service of musical worship on Sunday at the regular 11 a.m. worship service.

The program, "Songs of the Spirit," will include selections by the ladies' sextet, men's quartet, the Morgan Handbell Choir, the youth and children's choirs and vocal and instrumental soloists. The Sanctuary Choir will offer favorite anthems from its 2007-08 repertoire.

The congregation also will have the opportunity to join with the choirs in singing four gospel songs written by Frances Jane "Fanny" Crosby: "Blessed Assurance," "All the Way My Savior Leads Me," "Near the Cross" and "Jesus Is Calling."

Organist Ellen Cheek and pianist Christina Ryu will accompany the musicians and the congregational singing.

The Mount Carmel youth will host a spaghetti luncheon following the service as one of the group's projects to raise funds to help finance its annual summer mission trip.

The church is at 2016 Mount Carmel Church Road. The public is invited.


Buddhist center offers teaching, meditation

The Kosala Buddhist Center in Carrboro offers Buddhist teachings, discussion and meditation with resident teacher Gen Tilopa from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

The April series will focus on the subject "Dealing With Anger." The May series will focus on "Faith Freedom and Spirituality."

Cost is $10. First class is free for newcomers. Kosala Center is at 711 W. Rosemary St. in Carrboro, above Carrburritos.

Services, events at Binkley Baptist

Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, holds regular worship services each Sunday at 11 a.m.

Church school precedes the worship, starting at 9:30 a.m. The Contemplative Prayer Group meets each Monday in the chapel at 9:15 a.m.

Sunday worship services at the United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., are held at 8:45 and 11 a.m.

Church School for all ages is at 10 a.m.

Sermon Shaping meetings are held every Wednesday at 7 a.m. in the library. One of the pastors leads a look at the lectionary texts for the next Sunday.

Services, events at Chapel of the Cross

Sunday services at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church, 304 E. Franklin St., will include Holy Eucharist at 7:30, 9 and 11:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. A service of Sung Compline will be held at 9:30 p.m. in the church.

Brief services of Evening Prayer will be held Monday, Tuesday and April 23 and April 24 at 5:15 p.m.

Christian education for adults on Sunday will begin at 10:20 a.m. in the chapel. The topic will be anti-racism and the Episcopal Church.

The weekly Tuesday morning Bible study will meet Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in the parish library. This self-led study welcomes newcomers.

The Centering Prayer Group will meet today at 5 p.m. in the parish house.

Episcopal Campus Ministry will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. for a cookout. All members of the university community are invited.

The Young Adults Group meets for lunch most Sundays after the 11:15 a.m. service. The group also meets after the 9:30 p.m. Compline service on Sundays for refreshments at a Franklin Street restaurant.

A social hour follows the conclusion of the 11:15 a.m. service each Sunday.

Bart Ehrman, a professor of religious studies at UNC, will present a reading from his new book, "God's Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question -- Why We Suffer," in the chapel on April 29 at 7 p.m.

Series studies meaning of Methodism

The Rev. Verson Tyson leads a series called "What Does It Mean to Be a Methodist Christian in 2008" on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Amity United Methodist Church, 825 Estes Drive. The series will continue through April 29.

Sunday worship service is at 11 a.m. Sunday School starts at 9:45 a.m.

The Youth group meets Sundays at 5 p.m. and has Bible study on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at Starbucks on Franklin Street.

Advent Lutheran holds services, Bible classes

Sunday services at the Unity Center of Peace Church, 8800 Seawell School Road, are from 11 a.m. to noon. The Adult Forum precedes the service each Sunday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.

Mark Malachi facilitates Jewish Erev Shabbat services on the last Friday of each month. The service begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes chanting, Hebrew prayers and music.

A healing circle meets weekly on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Course in Miracles continues on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and on Sundays at 7:30 p.m.
