Lutheran campus ministry resumes

Holy Trinity Lutheran Ministry, 300 E. Rosemary St., holds Sunday services at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m.

Lutheran Campus Ministry conducts worship on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. A meal for students is served at 6:15 p.m.

Free parking is available at the 300 E. Rosemary Street location.


New Hope marks anniversary

New Hope Presbyterian Church, 4701 N.C. 86 Chapel Hill, will celebrate its annual Homecoming Sunday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harriet Isbell as the guest preacher.

After the church service, the Rev. Ron Stoker, pastor of New Hope, will lead a brief ceremony to dedicate the new $1.4 million education building and fellowship hall.

Buddhist priests to give public talks

Dairyu Michael Wenger, a Buddhist priest at the San Francisco Zen Center, will give a public talk Sunday, Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel Hill Zen Center. He will also lead a workshop on "Entering the Practice Right Where You Are" that will focus on how to begin and continue to begin Zen practice through attention, generosity, vulnerability, patience and courage, Friday through Sunday 22-24.

Daigaku Rumme, a Zen Buddhist priest who trained in Japan for 27 years, will give a public talk about Zen practice on Sept. 2 at 8:15 p.m. Before the talk, there will be one period of meditation from 7:30 to 8:10.

Everyone is welcome. Both talks are at the Chapel Hill Zen Center, 5322 N.C. 86, Chapel Hill.

Bible Church holds movie nights

The Chapel Hill Bible Church, 260 Erwin Road, will hold back-to-back free movie nights on the lawn to mark its Back to School Bash Thursday and Friday, Aug. 21 and 22.

Thursday, "Homeward Bound" will be shown, and donations of canned pet food will be gathered for Animal Protection Services, which will be on hand with a few animals. Hot dogs will be served; please bring a dessert to share.

On Friday, "Cars" will be shown. Water play, ice cream and games will be available.

Activities begin at 7 p.m. both nights, and the movies will start at 8:30. Call 403-0310.


Advent Lutheran holds services

Advent Lutheran Church, 230 Erwin Road in Chapel Hill, is on its summer schedule. Worship service will be at 10 a.m.

The Advocate holds services, programs

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate celebrates Holy Eucharist each Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, 1200 Mason Farm Road. All are welcome for a fellowship hour with refreshments following the service.

Each Wednesday at 10 a.m. the church office at 403 Weaver St. hosts playtime and Bible study. At noon there is a celebration of Holy Eucharist.

Amity UMC offers bible school

The Rev. Tuck Taylor Bounds leads worship at Amity United Methodist Church on Sundays at 11 a.m.

Sunday school for all ages is at 9:45 a.m.

Children are studying the "Way of the Child" curriculum. Adult Bible Study is discussing "Images of Christ."

Services, events at Chapel of the Cross

Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St., begins its academic year service schedule on Sunday, with services of Holy Eucharist Sunday at 7:30, 9 and 11:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. Children's chapel, a service for children aged 2-5, is held during the 9 a.m. service.

Youth Summer Mission trip participants will offer a presentation about their summer trip between the 9 and 11:15 services.

Sung Compline will be held Sunday at 9:30 p.m. Brief services of Evening Prayer will be held Monday and Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

The Centering Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in the parish house.

Jewish Chorale seeks singers

The Triangle Jewish Chorale is seeking singers. The chorale performs vocal works in concert, for special occasions and in celebration of community events.

Membership is open to all who can sing in tune and listen to others at the same time; who want to sing and perform Jewish music in English, Hebrew, Yiddish; who are willing to put in the time to learn their parts; and who are able and willing to attend rehearsals regularly.

Downloadable mp3 files of the parts are provided and fellow chorale members are available to help in the learning process.

Regular rehearsals take place twice per month, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Judea Reform Congregation in Durham.

Members do not have to be able to sight read, but rudimentary knowledge of musical notation is required. Members do not need to be Jewish or be affiliated with any Jewish organization. An audition is required.

The first rehearsal for the fall season is scheduled for Sept. 2.

UMC breakfast for back to school

Orange United Methodist Church, 1220 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., will hosts a Back-to-School FAN-Fare & Pancake Breakfast Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The Family Advocacy Network (FAN), a program of the Mental Health Association in Orange County, will sponsor the annual Back-to-School event for families of special needs children. The event also offers a free workshop for parents on "Organizing for Your Special Needs Child's School Year." School-age children can enjoy a Crafts and Cartoons time while parents attend the workshop.

New Salem offers recovery classes

New Salem Church, 5030 Old Graham Road, Pittsboro, offers Celebrate Recovery classes each Sunday at 7 p.m. Anyone struggling with addictions or compulsive behaviors that make life unmanageable is invited. Light refreshments are available at 6:30 p.m. Celebrate Recovery offers a time of praise, prayer and small group sessions that give participants a safe place to share and a possible turning point.

Events, services at United Church

Sunday worship services at the United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., are at 8:45 and 11 a.m. Crooked Creek, an a capella quartet, will sing at both services.

People are invited to bring a favorite dish to share at 10 a.m. to welcome everyone back from summer break.

Susan Steinberg will lead teacher orientation for teachers of classes for 3-year-olds through fifth grade at 10 a.m. in Room 111. Frank Boyd will meet with middle school teachers at 9 a.m. and with high school teachers at 10 a.m. in Room 159.

Iglesia Unida, Spanish language worship, meets Sundays at 11 a.m. in the new Assembly Hall in the west wing of the building.

The United Church of Chapel Hill Softball Team will play Community Church at 4:50 p.m. on Field 2.

Sermon Shaping meetings are held on Wednesdays at 7 a.m. in the library.

The Chancel Choir begins rehearsals on Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the music room. New singers are welcome.

Methodist church on school schedule

With the beginning of the school year and the end of summer vacations, University United Methodist Church has resume its traditional school-year schedule of two worship services. The 8:30 a.m. service will feature weekly communion through World Communion Sunday on Oct. 5.


Outdoor services at Southern Village

Green Chapel invites all to outdoor Christian worship each Sunday at 10 a.m. on the Southern Village Green through Oct. 5.
