Collin Beatty, a senior at East Chapel Hill High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 820, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was cited during the troop court of honor on Sept. 30 at Triangle Church on Barbee Chapel Road. As part of meeting the rank requirements, he designed and constructed a bridge spanning 30 feet on the Meeting of the Waters Creek in the Coker Pinetum, which is administered by the N.C. Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill.
In addition to Scouting, Collin is a member of the East Chapel Hill Track Team, plays basketball and soccer, and referees soccer games for the Rainbow Soccer League.

Alison Ryan of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the fall and spring semesters at Claremont-McKenna College in Claremont, Calif.

Piedmont Health Services has received the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations Gold Seal of Approval by demonstrating compliance with national standards for health care quality and safety set by the commission. Piedmont Health Services is at 301 Lloyd St. in Carrboro.

Carter G. Ruff of Chapel Hill recently completed a 30-day wilderness travel course in the Rocky Mountains with the National Outdoor Leadership School. His group of 11 students and three instructors began with the basics: cooking, camping, stove use, map reading and leave-no-trace techniques. The curriculum also included backpacking in the Wind River Range. Students learned how to fly fish, rock climb, identify plants and wildlife, and climb peaks to take in the vistas of this mountain wilderness.

Sam Kenworthy,a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, recently won an All-American Scholarship from Vector Marketing for ranking in the top 35 sales representatives (and full-time students) out of 40,000 nationwide.

Mary Clara Capel of Chapel Hill has been appointed to serve a four-year term as an alumnae representative to the board of trustees at St. Mary's School in Raleigh. Capel is director of administrative services for Capel Incorporated, an importer and manufacturer of rugs. She is past president and chairman of the board for U.S. Rugs, a sister company to Capel, for which she serves as secretary to the board.

Herbert B. Peterson, professor and chair in the department of maternal and child health at the UNC School of Public Health and professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the UNC School of Medicine, has been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine. Members are selected from candidates nominated for their professional achievement and commitment to service. Sixty-five new members and four foreign associates were chosen this year, bringing the IOM's total active membership to 1,538.

David Sehat, a recent doctoral graduate in history from UNC, has been named a visiting scholar at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Sehat was among seven scholars selected nationwide to participate in the program, which supports the work of young public policy analysts, humanists and social scientists who show promise of becoming leaders in their fields.

Eleni Tzima, assistant professor of cell and molecular physiology in the UNC School of Medicine, has been named a 2007 Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholar. The award provides $200,000 over four years in support of research on the role of blood flow in cardiovascular disease, primarily among the elderly.

Rhiannon King of Chapel Hill will be one of a group of outstanding students across the United States who will participate this fall in the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security: Exploring American Diplomacy, Intelligence and Defense." She is a senior at East Chapel Hill High School. She will go to Washington, D.C., to learn about the different careers in intelligence, national security, the diplomatic corps and other possibilities during a six-day program.

The UNC Campus Chapter of Habtiat for Humanity won the Campus Chapter of the Year Award in Atlanta. The award carries with it a $20,000 prize.

Charles and Shirley Weiss of Chapel Hill have donated $50,000 to the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle to establish a $100,000 endowment for up-and-coming solo artists. The orchestra will use the money to help establish a $100,000 endowment.

Five students from CHCCS schools were selected by audition for the 2007 North Carolina Middle Schools Honor Chorus.
Selected students are Sarah McAdams and Alexa Young, Smith Middle School; Troy Mitchell, Phillips Middle School; and Kathleen Smith and Tim Fay, McDougle Middle School.
These students will attend a two-day choral workshop with nationally acclaimed director Vijay Singh in November. The Middle School Honor Chorus will give a concert for the N.C. Music Educators Association annual conference on Nov. 11 at the Stevens Center in Winston Salem.
