- Brian Ward Powers of Chapel Hill has been designated a Sarah and James Bowdoin scholar at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. To be a Bowdoin scholar, a student must be in the top 20 percent of each class for the previous academic year and have a grade-point average of 4.0.
- Tova Boehm, an Earlham College junior and daughter of Nancy Luberoff and Bruce Boehm of Chapel Hill, performed in Earlham's Family Weekend Concert on Oct. 6. Boehm is a member of Concert Choir.
- Leslie V. Parise, professor and chair of the department of biochemistry and biophysics, and Roger Narayan, associate professor of biomedical engineering, have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Both are faculty members in the UNC School of Medicine. Members receive the honor for scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications, according to the association.
- Parise won the award "for significant contributions to the field of cell biology, particularly to the study of cell-adhesion proteins," according to AAAS. Her research has helped to understand the basic mechanisms underlying diseases such as heart attack, stroke and sickle cell disease.
- Narayan received the award for "distinguished contributions at the interface of materials engineering and medicine, specifically for increasing collaboration and interaction among medical device manufacturers, biomaterials engineers and clinicians," the AAAS said.
- Sarah Holloman of Chapel Hill participated in the Freshman Service Experience at American University in Washington, D.C. Freshman contributed nearly 10,000 hours of service at 37 sites around Washington. Holloman is a recent graduate of East Chapel Hill High School
- UNC biologist Alan Jones has been elected to a three-year term on the executive committee of the American Society of Plant Biologists. Jones is the George and Alice Welsh Distinguished professor in the departments of biology and pharmacology and the program in genetics and molecular biology.
