Fred M. Eckel of Chapel Hill was presented with the Wyeth Bowl of Hygeia Award on Oct. 27 at the annual convention, held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Research Triangle Park.
The Bowl of Hygeia Award is recognized as the most prestigious award given by the pharmacy profession.
The recipients are selected by their respective associations for their outstanding record of community service.
Natalie Mayo, a member of the collegiate chapter of Pi Beta Phi at UNC, recently won the Chapter Service Award for her consistent and dedicated service to the chapter throughout her collegiate experience.
She served her chapter as president and always encouraged the executive board to implement new service projects. For instance, one of her ideas, Race for Reading, raised more than $10,000 for First Book, Pi Beta Phi's literacy partner. Mayo was also involved in her campus's dance marathon and Order of Omega Honor Society.
The award is given to an initiated member in the senior class who has made an impact on chapter unity and achieved results in line with fraternity values.
University of Chicago professor Mark J. Ratain is this year's recipient of the Award for Clinical Service by the Institute for Pharmacogenomics and Individualized Therapy at UNC.
The award honors a person who has made significant contributions to the advancement of individualized therapy in clinical practice.
