  • Bryan Comer, son of Linda Yates Comer of Chapel Hill, has been attending the Nascar Technical Institute in Mooresville since October 2006 and has carried a 4.0 grade-point average since he got there. He attended Chapel Hill High before graduating from Jacksonville High in Jacksonville, N.C.

    The core mechanics classes will be followed by the Nascar engine and fabrication classes. He intends to graduate from this program and then follow up with a Nissan mechanics program that NTI offers.

  • Simon Goodacre of Chapel Hill has been named to first honors on the dean's list for the fall semester at Clark University in Worchester, Mass. To achieve first honors, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher.
  • Hillary Superak of Carrboro has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester in the School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. To qualify for the list, a student must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.6 or higher and be enrolled in at least 12 graded units.
  • Shen Chen of Chapel Hill has been named a 2007 Super Teen by Next Step Magazine. Shen will be featured on the cover of the March/April issue of the magazine, which is a nationally distributed college, career and life-planning magazine for high school students. The 2007 contest recognized 161 Super Teens throughout the United States. Super teens spend four or more hours per week participating in community service activities with almost 10 percent volunteering 10 or more hours a week. Ninety-eight percent of the teens surveyed are also members of their high school math or science club, school newspaper, sports team or drama club, underscoring their ability to manage their time.
  • Katrina Zawojski, daughter of Chris and Camille Zawojski of Chapel Hill, has received the Dean's Award for academic excellence for the fall semester at Colgate University. To receive the award, a student must achieve at grade-point average of 3.3 or higher.
  • Kaitlin Hamilton of Chapel Hill has received an Elizabeth Whitaker Scholarship from Salem College worth $75,400 over four years. Hamilton, the daughter of Bradley and Mary Hamilton of Chapel Hill, is a student at Chapel Hill High School.
  • Steven Couper of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is the son of David and Rietta Couper.
  • Lori Esposito of UNC-Chapel Hill has been named the grand prize winner of the 2007 Rhein Medall Prize for Community Art. Esposito was selected from a pool of 80 artists. Judging was held at the McColl Center for Visual Arts on March 8.
  • Ten high school students from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA participated in the N.C. Youth and Government Legislature in February. Chris Cunningham and Blaisdell Shaw from East Chapel Hill High; Jessica Ressler from Woods Charter; Colin Ashley from Carolina Friends; and Zoemma Steffen, Johanna Dadisman, Andrew Morin, Mel Shears, Alice Cruz and Erin Heffelfinger from Chapel Hill High took part in the event. The four-day conference is a laboratory experience for the North Carolina governmental processes and is student-led. Students must draw up and present bills in the House of Representatives.
  • Julia T. McKinley of Chapel Hill has been named to second honors on the dean's list for the fall semester at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. To be eligible for second honors a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. McKinley is a graduate of Chapel Hill High School.
  • Fan Ye of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester in the School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. To qualify for the list, a student must earn a semester grade-point average of 3.6 or higher and be enrolled in at least 12 graded units.
  • Michael Richard Greenberg of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Wake Forest University. To make the list, a student must achieve a 3.0 or higher grade-point average.
  • Cadet John Lawrence Zornick Jr., son of John and Pam Zornick of Carrboro, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. To make the list, a student must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average in all courses. Zornick is a graduate of Chapel Hill High School.
  • Jing Li of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. To make the list, a student must achieve an academic average of 3.0 or higher for the quarter.
  • Brian H. Finley of Chapel Hill has been named to first honors on the dean's list for the fall semester at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. To be eligible for first honors, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher.
