- Thomas A. Moore of Chapel Hill is an honors graduate of Hargraves Military Academy in Chatham, Va. To be an honors graduate, a student must complete the advanced studies diploma and maintain a grade-point average of 3 or higher. Moore is the son of James and Carol Moore and plans to attend Auburn University in the fall.

- Dane Morgan Hiltner of Chapel Hill graduated from the U.S. Military Academy during commencement ceremonies May 26. He is the son of Randall and Robyn Hiltner and a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and will complete officer basic training at Fort Wood, Mo.
- Charles S. Britt of Chapel Hill graduated from Hargraves Military Academy during ceremonies June 7. He is the son of Robert and Robin Britt and plans to attend Campbell University in the fall.
- Laine Alden Cidlowski, daughter of John and Nancy Cidlowski of Chapel Hill, received a master's degree in city planning with a certificate in urban design during commencement ceremonies May 14 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.
- Jonathan Parker Pharr of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Elon University during commencement ceremonies May 19. He is the son of Ron and Joan Pharr.
- Charles A. Daugherty of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Rhgodes College in Memphis, Tenn. To qualify for the list, a student must be enrolled in at least 13 credit hours of academic work and must achieve a semester grade-point average of 3.7 or better.
- Katherine Elizabeth Johnson, daughter of Karen Fisher of Chapel Hill, was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Queens University of Charlotte. To make the list, a student must maintain a term average of 3.5 or higher in at least 12 credit hours of work for the semester.
- Army Pvt. Kenneth M. Howell has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, Howell studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. He is the son of Karen Gentry of Efland and Kenneth Howell of Chapel Hill.
- Anna Margaret Schimmelfing of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Elon University during commencement ceremonies May 19. She is the daughter of Leon and Lucy Schimmelfing.
- Samantha Vaillancourt of Chapel Hill graduated with high honors from St. Mary's School in Raleigh on May 20. She is the daughter of Michel Vaillancourt.
- Craig Ward of Chapel Hill was elected to Ace Hardware Corporation's board of directors during the retailer-owned cooperative's annual shareholders meeting held on June 5 at its headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill. Ward, 46, was elected to his first three-year term, representing retailers as a director-at-large. Ward owns Ace Town and Country Hardware, a seven-store chain in Chapel Hill.
- Julia Sendor of Chapel Hill has received a $5,000 Morris K. Udall Foundation scholarship. She is a junior at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
- Kristin Parker of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list at the University of Evansville. She is the daughter of David and Regina Parker. The make the list, a student must has a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while carrying 12 or more hours of credit.
- Mallory C. House of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring term at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. To make the list, a full-time student must receive a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher. She is the daughter of Kathleen Harris.
- Marjorie Elliott Burton of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Elon University during commencement ceremonies May 19. She is the daughter of Claude and Marjorie Burton.
- Jaclyn P. Holland of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring term at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. To make the list, a full-time student must receive a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Holland.
- Alexander Schaller Corey of Carrboro received a bachelor's degree from Elon University during commencement ceremonies May 19. He is the son of John and Denise Corey.
- Leigh Tyndall of Chapel Hill graduated with high honors from St. Mary's School in Raleigh on May 20. She is the daughter of Kathy and Don Tyndall.
- James N. Bates of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree from Furman University during commencement ceremonies June 2. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Bates.
