  • Lauren Livingston Long of Chapel Hill received a bachelor's degree in nursing from UNC-Greensboro. She is a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School. She also was named a North Carolina Nursing Scholar.
  • Julianne Elizabeth Lowell of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill on May 13. She has been accepted to attend The Publishing Institute at The University of Denver. She is the daughter of Duston and Susan Lowell.
  • Kimberly Powell of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the second semester of the 2006-07 academic year at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. She is the daughter of David and Margo Powell and is majoring in studio art with a concentration in deaf studies.
  • Ashwin Peres-Da-Silva of Carrboro recently served as a Senate page in the N.C. General Assembly. He is the son of Anil and Mary Peres-Da-Silva and was sponsored by state Sen. Ellie Kinnaird. Pages attend Senate sessions daily, deliver bills and amendments for the senators and have committee assignments. They also assist staff members with office duties during their week at the legislature.
  • Charles B. Neas of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester. Neas is a junior majoring in aerospace engineering.
  • Austin Cook of Chapel Hill placed first in the 38th National Judo Championship held last weekend in Indianapolis, Ind. Austin is a member of the Bushido Judo school in Durham and is coached by Sensei Darian Stokes. This is Austin's first nationals. He has been performing in judo for less than a year. He is 15 years old and is a student at Chapel Hill High School.
  • James Joseph DeWalt Brown attained the rank of Eagle Scout on Oct. 1, 2006. For his Eagle service project, Joe led a team of youth and adults in the design and construction of a nature trail at Mary Scroggs Elementary School in Chapel Hill. Complete with two bridges and tree identification tags, the nature trail is used by teachers, students and neighborhood residents.

    Joe began scouting during the fall of his fifth-grade year when he joined the Beaver Patrol of Troop 39 in Chapel Hill. He served the troop as assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, quartermaster, troop guide and assistant senior patrol leader. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow.

    While at Chapel Hill High School, Joe has played trombone in the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble. Joe graduated from CHHS in June and is working as a research intern with the North Carolina Space Grant at N.C. State University. He plans to attend Elon University in the fall.

    His parents are Susan DeWalt Brown and Chris Brown.

  • Matthew C. Boone of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average during the semester.
  • Jeffrey Dobbins, the son of James and Suzanne Dobbins of Chapel Hill, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Macalester College. To be included on the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher.
  • Elizabeth Leinesch of Chapel Hill recently received an independent research fellowship by Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. Funded by the college, the fellowships enable qualified students to carry out independent research activities in any field taught at the college or to undertake projects in the creative or performing arts. Leinesch is the daughter of Michael Leinesch and Ann Baker.
  • Robert E. Hamilton of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average during the semester.
  • R. Scott Tobin has been named president and chairman of the board of directors of the UNC School of Law Foundation. Tobin is a lawyer with HunterMaclean in Savannah, Ga.
  • Chase C. Holland of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average during the semester.
  • Rachel Walker Reeves of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at N.C. State University. She is the daughter of Cindy Bristow and Jay Reeves. To be named to the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
  • Richard Samulski of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Virginia Tech University. To qualify for the list, a student must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade-point average during the semester.
  • Anne Fernald of Chapel Hill has received the 2007 North Carolina Extension and Community Association Leadership Award, one of the highest honors that can be given by the Extension and Community Association, a volunteer organization of the Cooperative Extension Service in North Carolina. Fernald has been a dedicated member of the Antioch Extension and Community Association Club for more than 15 years and has served as president, vice president, health and wellness issues coordinator and global issues coordinator of her club. She was corresponding secretary of the Orange County Extension and Community Association, and serves as recording secretary on the district level.
