- David R. Godschalk, a member of the Chapel Hill Town Council from 1985 to 1989, was named one of the most influential planners in North Carolina during the past 50 years by the state chapter of the American Planning Association. Godschalk is the Stephen Baxter Professor Emeritus in the department of city and regional planning and an adjunct faculty member in the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at UNC-Chapel Hill.
- Casey Webber, son of Richard and Elizibeth Webber of Chapel Hill, has enrolled as a first-year student at Earlham College, a liberal arts college in Richmond, Ind.
- Charles Patrick Martin-Shields of Chapel Hill has completed a two-year tour of Western Samoa with the Peace Corps. He worked primarily with local teachers in the development of English language teaching programs for all educational levels and taught history at the Marist high school. He recently enrolled in a dual master's degree program at American University and the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., where he will work on degrees in peace and conflict resolution and theological studies. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 2001.
- Eugene Howe, son of Eleanor and Daniel Howe of Chapel Hill, has enrolled as a first-year student at Earlham College, a liberal arts college in Richmond, Ind..
- Lilli-Marie Mann of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. To make the list, a full-time student must have a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher.
- Army National Guard Pfc. Kerry K. Tarpley has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, Tarpley studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. Tarpley is the sister of Ellie Stevenson of Hillsborough.
- Robert Patton is the new commander of American Legion Post 6 in Chapel Hill. He took over his duties July 1. Joining Patton is a new slate of officers that includes Harlan Cornell, the first vice commander; Robert Oakes, the second vice commander; and Paul Romweber, the third vice commander. Other officers are Nick Ladd, finance officer; Everett "Bud" Hampton, adjutant; Tom Chegash, judge advocate; Garland Navel, chaplain; Robert Blackwood, post service officer; Jim Stalling, post historian, and Paul Horwhat, Bill McDonald and Edward Gill, sergeants-at-arms.
- Robert Hart, son of Tracey West and Robert Hart of Chapel Hill, has enrolled as a first-year student at Earlham College, a liberal arts college in Richmond, Ind.
- Andrew Hampton of Chapel Hill was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. To make the list, a full-time student must have a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher.
- Marie Adelia Principe of Chapel Hill has joined the Peace Corps. She departed July 16 for South Africa to begin training as a health extension volunteer. She will train until October, when she will be placed in a South African community. She is the daughter of Nick and Marianne Principe and a graduate of Chapel Hill High School.
- Oriana Filiaci, daughter of Marie Seddon of Chapel Hill, has enrolled as a first-year student at Earlham College, a liberal arts college in Richmond, Ind.
