- Jessica Lauren Riley of Hillsborough received a bachelor’s degree in psychology during fall graduation ceremonies at UNC-Wilmington.
- Pat Shane of the UNC School of Education has been elected the 2009-10 president of the National Science Teachers Association. She will serve a three-year term beginning June 1. Shane is associate director of the UNC school’s Center for Mathematics and Science Education and clinical professor of science education.
- Sarah Heath Johnson of Chapel Hill was selected for the chancellor’s list at UNC-Greensboro for the fall semester. She is the daughter of Frankford and Sue Johnson. To qualify for the list, a student must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.65 or higher while enrolled for 12 or more hours.
- Jaclyn P. Holland of Chapel Hill was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Holland. To qualify for the list, a full-time student must have a grade-point average of 3.4 or better.
- Albert Baldwin, a researcher at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, has received a two-year $100,000 LUNGevity Foundation Research Grant from the National Lung Cancer Partnership. Baldwin, an associate director of the Lineberger Center and the William Rand Kenan professor of biology and cancer cell biology in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences’ biology department, will use the grant to study how normal cells are transformed into cancer cells through molecular changes.
- Brian Moore of Chapel Hill was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Wittenburg University in Ingfield, Ohio. To qualify for the list, a student must have an academic average of 3.5 or higher.
- Carol Parr of Carrboro has been named materials officer of Chapel Hill Flotilla 98 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
- Kerrie Allison Smith of Chapel Hill received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education during fall graduation ceremonies at UNC-Wilmington.
- Three artists from Orange County have received Durham Arts Council Emerging Artists Grants. The recipients, their art disciplines and uses for the grant are: Christa Carnell, film-video, to support production of a promotional trailer for the documentary “Liability U”; Jim Haberman, photography, to fund the costs of finding a publisher for his book “Middle East: Multiple Realities”; Carolyn Twesten, craft, to finish a fully functioning pottery studio by spring 2008.
- Elizabeth “Liz” McIntyre of Chapel Hill was named to the dean’s list of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for the fall term at Villanova University. She graduated from East Chapel Hill High School in 2007. To be named to the list, a student must maintain a minimum semester grade-point average of 3.5.
- Stephen D. Arthur of Chapel Hill was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Hampton University in Hampton, Va. He is the son of Crystal Arthur and a 2006 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School. To be named to the list, a student must have a 3.5 grade-point average.
- Helen R. Miller of Chapel Hill has been named finance officer of Chapel Hill Flotilla 98 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
- Cindy Yuan of Chapel Hill was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Mars Hill College. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5 with at least 12 semester hours and carry no grade lower than a C.
- Joseph Francis Vrnak of Chapel Hill received a bachelor’s degree in history during fall graduation ceremonies at UNC-Wilmington.
- Mallory C. House of Chapel Hill was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. She is the daughter of Kathleen Harris. To qualify for the list, a full-time student must have a grade-point average of 3.4 or better.
- Erich Grant of Chapel Hill has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Tufts University. He is the son of Sharon Hogan and Robert Grant and a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School.
- Six students from Chapel Hill have been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Vanderbilt University. They are: Eamon Robert Cullen; Sami Russell Nour; Alexander McLain Grubbs, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Grubbs; Mary Bridget Chesson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl G. Chesson; Catherine Belle Meador, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith G. Meador; and Christine Lee Sailer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott L. Sailer. To qualify for the list, a student must have a grade-point average of 3.5.
