Rashkis wins chess championship

Rashkis Elementary School in Chapel Hill is the state champion in the K-5 section of the 2008 N.C. Scholastic Chess Championship.

The N.C. Scholastic Chess Championships were held Feb. 22-24 at the Blake Hotel in Charlotte.

Members of the Rashkis K-5 Championship team included: Dane Simon, Hans Singh, Benjamin Senior, Joshua Lai, Thomas Wang, Iyin Battle, Arnav Subramanya, Aninda Manocha, Nathaniel Lai, and Jeffrey Williams.

In individual competition, Dane Simon took second place, Hans Singh was fourth, Benjamin Senior finished 13th place, and Joshua Lai and Thomas Wang tied for 24th.

The K-3 team from Rashkis finished in eighth place. Team members included: Max Finklestein, Victor Zhao, Alex Broz, and Bradley Clary.

The K-1 team finished in fifth place. Team members included Aneesha Manocha, Henry Fu and Felix Zhao.
