Allison Press, a ninth-grader at Chapel Hill High School, was chosen as one of the 40 regional finalists in Google's nationwide Doodle 4 Google competition.

Doodle 4 Google is an art competition open to K-12 school children across the United States that asks them to design a Google logo or "doodle" inspired by the question, "What If...?"

The winning student's doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage on Thursday. The champion "doodler" also will win a $10,000 college scholarship and a $25,000 technology grant for his or her school.

"Allison is a great student with unlimited potential," said Jack Watson, Allison's drawing and painting teacher at Chapel Hill High School.

Students' doodles were judged on artistic merit, creativity, representation of the theme and other criteria. Out of thousands of entries submitted from across the country, Allison's doodle was chosen as one of the top 40.

Allison's doodle and the 39 other regional winners' doodles will be displayed online today at www.google.com/doodle4google. The public will vote to select the four national finalists.

On Wednesday, Allison and the other regional winners will attend the Doodle 4 Google awards ceremony at the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., where the national finalists and overall winner will be announced.
