The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools has already begun a series of events to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Students and families are encouraged to participate in a number of ways.
The district will turn 100 on May 4, 2009. The district was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly on this date in 1909.
In September, the district unveiled its Centennial Web site,
CHCCS@100. At the district's convocation in August, it presented a historical video depicting the district from its charter through segregation and culminating in its plans for the 21st century.
Events still to come include a visual history timeline on display at Lincoln Center on Nov. 5, and a district Book Chat on Nov. 16.
Students will present special projects on the 100th day of the district's 100th year, Feb. 4, 2009. A "wax museum" event based on the district's history is scheduled for Feb. 24, and a poetry contest will be held in April.
