Twenty seventh-graders in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools have qualified for Grand Recognition in the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) this year.

To qualify for Grand Recognition, a student must post Scholastic Aptitude Test scores of more than 660 in the math portion, 650 in the verbal portion, or 1270 total.

From Phillips Middle School, the students who qualified are: Bernard Amaldoss, Nathan Cho, Mitchell Gelpi, Kelly Jiang, Alexander Kelly, Nina Pande, Jacob Reed, Casey Smith, Yu Wang and Maggie Xing.

The students who qualified from Smith Middle School are: Eleanor Funkhouser, Arun Ganesh, Jessica Gao, Zijing Gao, Wesley Guo, Jinyoung Kang, Galen Kirkpatrick, Amanda Lohmann, Alexander Werden and Carl Yin.

There will be a ceremony to recognize the Duke TIP Grand Recognition students from across the nation on May 19 at Duke University.

The district had 133 seventh graders who took the SAT or ACT. Of those, 86 qualified for state recognition in the Duke TIP program. To qualify at the state level, students must receive a score that is greater than or equal to 510 on either the math or verbal portion of the SAT.

The Duke TIP program is a nonprofit organization that identifies academically talented students and provides innovative programs to support their educational development. The program began in 1980. For information, see www.tip.duke.edu.
