Live music, dance, puppets, exhibits, demonstrations and more will be on tap Saturday, April 26, when the Town of Chapel Hill presents the inaugural Earth Action Day Celebration atop the Wallace Parking Deck downtown.

Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation is coordinating the event, which will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 50 exhibitors and interactive demonstrations are lined up to provide fun and education about the planet and the human relationship with the environment. The event is free, family-friendly and open to all.

Paperhand Puppet Intervention, Pamlico Joe, the Studio A Dancers and Jimmy Magoo will be among the performers providing entertainment with an environmental theme.

Exhibitors run the gamut from Active Living By Design to the Zipcar.

Chapel Hill's stormwater management division will partner with Rain Water Solutions, a local rain barrel provider, to host a rain barrel demonstration and offer rain barrels for sale.

Orange County Solid Waste Management will provide composting demonstrations, and Orange Water and Sewer Authority will demonstrate the use of a low-flow shower heads.

Footprint Eco Magazine, a free magazine about sustainable lifestyles, will demonstrate ways to live green without sacrificing style, comfort or convenience. Other groups staging demonstrations, exhibits and events include the Morehead Planetarium, Friends of Bolin Creek, Piedmon Biofuels, Piedmont Wildlife Center, Recyclery and Sierra Club.

Free Chapel Hill Transit buses will run from the town's park and ride lots and various neighborhoods to the downtown area.

In conjunction with Earth Action Day, the Franklin 5000 and the inaugural Tar Heel 10 Miler road races are scheduled for Saturday in downtown Chapel Hill.

The Wallace Parking Deck is at 150 E. Rosemary St. in downtown Chapel Hill. The plaza on top of the deck is a public park that features an amphitheater, benches, elevators and restrooms.
