Antioch fundraiser will serve up country breakfast

Art exhibit -- 'Alpine Mist VI' is among the works in 'The Face of the Earth,' an exhibition of watercolor-mixed media paintings by Nerys Levy on display at the Community Church of Chapel Hill, 106 Purefoy Road. 'I am concerned about the abuse our planet is enduring and hope that the viewer, by contemplating my paintings, will be moved by its beauty and, in turn, give it the respect it is owed,' Levy said. The exhibition is on display through June 28. For information, call 942-2050.

Hillsborough UCC to join conversation on race

The Hillsborough United Church of Christ will join UCC churches across the nation in a dialogue on race on Sunday at 11 a.m.

The initiative is designed to begin a sacred conversation on an issue of importance to the nation.

Theological discussion series

begins at Episcopal church

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate, 1200 Mason Farm Road, will celebrate Holy Eucharist for Trinity Sunday on Sunday at 5 p.m.

The Rev. Lisa Fischbeck, vicar of the Advocate, will be the celebrant and preacher. All are welcome and invited to join the congregation for a fellowship hour with refreshments following the service.

"Theology on Deck," a series of theological discussions, will be held the next three Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. at 403 W. Weaver St. in Carrboro. The topic Thursday will be "Who is Jesus?" On May 22 the topic will be "Darwin Was an Anglican," and on May 29 the topic will be "Why Suffering?" All are welcome. Tea will be served.

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate is a new Episcopal Church in Orange County.

Letter-writing project to support orphans

Christ Church in Chapel Hill, through a partnership with Children's HopeChest, plans to send letters of support to children at a Russian orphanage in Slobodskoy.

The church will hold a letter-writing event in support of the project Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Cafe Carolina in Meadowmont.

Letters will be translated and delivered to the orphans, who are ages 5 to 15. This event is open to the community. Refreshments will be served.


First Baptist holds Joy Night for youth

First Baptist Church of Chapel Hill invites young people to its "Rejoice in Your Youth" event at Joy Night on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The evening will include dance, mime and music performed by youth from churches throughout the Triangle. Youth Christian Fellowship will sponsor the event. For information, call 942-2552 or e-mail fbc1865@bellsouth.net. First Baptist is at 106 N. Roberson Street.


Buddhist center offers teaching, meditation

The Kosala Buddhist Center in Carrboro offers Buddhist teachings, discussion and meditation with resident teacher Gen Tilopa every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The May series focuses on "Faith Freedom and Spirituality." Cost is $10. First class is free for newcomers.

Advent Lutheran holds Bible classes, services

Advent Lutheran Church, 230 Erwin Road in Chapel Hill, holds Sunday service beginning at 10:25 a.m. and Bible classes for adults and children of all ages beginning at 9:05 a.m. All are welcome.

Worship services at United Church

Sunday worship services at the United Church of Chapel Hill, 1321 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., are at 8:45 and 11 a.m. This Sunday, the United Voices of Praise, a gospel choir, and Crooked Creek, a close-harmony group, will sing at the 8:45 a.m. service. The Chancel Choir and Crooked Creek will sing at the 11 a.m. service. The anniversary of the arrival of families from Burma will be celebrated and those who have contributed or participated in the refugee ministry will be recognized.

The church will begin its participation in "A Sacred Conversation on Race" Sunday at 10 a.m. Portions of Barack Obama's Philadelphia speech on race will be shown as a conversation starter. The conversation will help a committee construct a series of sacred conversations on race to be held in the fall.

An end-of-the-year celebration for Church School will be held Sunday with a short service in the sanctuary and an ice cream social in the Fellowship Hall.

Iglesia Unida, Spanish language worship, will meet Sunday at 11 a.m. in the new Assembly Hall in the west wing of the building.

Sermon Shaping meetings are held on Wednesdays at 7 a.m. in the library. One of the pastors leads a look at the lectionary texts for the next Sunday. For information call 942-3540 or see www.unitedchurch.org.


Services, events at Unity Center

Sunday services at the Unity Center of Peace Church, 8800 Seawell School Road, are from 11 a.m. to noon. The Adult Forum precedes the service each Sunday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.

Mark Malachi facilitates Jewish Erev Shabbat services on the last Friday of each month. The service begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes chanting, Hebrew prayers and music.

A healing circle meets weekly on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Binkley Baptist continues Vacation Bible School sign-up

Binkley Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, holds regular worship services each Sunday at 11 a.m.

Church school precedes the worship, starting at 9:30 a.m. The Contemplative Prayer Group meets each Monday in the chapel at 9:15 a.m.

Registration is under way for the Vacation Bible School's Rainforest Adventure. Vacation Bible School will begin on July 6 with a kickoff celebration and will continue July 7-11 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. A worship celebration on July 13 will wrap up the session.
