CIVIL WAR LIVING HISTORY -- The Chapel Hill Museum and Chapel Hill Preservation Society will present "O' Cruel War," a living history encampment and lantern-led tour of local sites significant in the Civil War. The living history encampment is free and will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, 523 E. Franklin St., and at the Horace Williams House, 610 E. Rosemary St. The tour will leave at 7 p.m. from the museum. Tour tickets are $35 for the general public, $17.50 with a student ID. Advance tickets are required. 967-1400.

HEALTHY KIDS DAY -- The YMCA Meadowmont Swim Club will hold a Healthy Kids Day and Family Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free family event at the YMCA Meadowmont Swim Club will feature games, music, inflatables and health booths. Free. 442-YMCA.

ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW -- The Hillsborough Arts Council will sponsor a Downtown Arts and Crafts Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lawn of the lawn of the Visitor Center at 150 East King St. The juried show will feature 32 artists and artisans offering a variety of pottery, photography, painting, wood carving, iron metal art, jewelry, baskets, lampwork glass and fiber art. Scott Klein, professor of English at Wake Forest University, will deliver a lecture to open the UNC Library Rare Book Collection exhibition "Joycean Generosity, Joycean Books," Friday at 5:45 p.m. in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room in Wilson Library. The exhibition features rare editions of works by Irish writer and poet James Joyce. Klein will discuss the connections between the literary difficulty of Joyce's works and the experiences of his characters and readers as they journey to comprehend their own worlds. Saturday is Earth Action Day in Chapel Hill, and events are scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. at the Morehead Planetarium on the UNC campus.
